Tennis Sweeps State Quarterfinals

There was a big win yesterday for the Verona High School girls tennis team. Playing in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey Section 2 Group 1 NJSIAA quarterfinals, the girls swept Secaucus 5-0.

Playing at first singles, Margot DaCosta defeated Krrisha Patel 6-0, 6-0. Second singles Emma Derderian won over Emily Chan 6-2, 6-0 while third singles Shaina Kogan bested Maryam Ahmed 6-1, 6-0.

Verona’s doubles teams also had strong wins. Emily Baumgard and Madison Lipinski, the first doubles squad, defeated Smirti Chopra and Hafsa Ahmed 6-1, 6-1 and our second doubles pairing of Katie Hunt and Cassie Collucci went 6-1, 6-0 over Khushi Jakhotiya and Damaris Acomata.

The VHS girls, who are the number 3 seed in the state tournament, face No. 2 seed Mountain Lakes on Thursday.
