The Verona Chapter of UNICO National, the nation’s largest Italian-American service organization, is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships. Scholarship applications were sent to Verona High School, Mount Saint Dominic, Seton Hall Prep and St. Peter’s Jersey City. Twenty-seven applications were received, so awarding six scholarships was a challenge. The Scholarship Committee once again was impressed with the caliber of high school students and enjoyed reading their letters of recommendations and essays. One student even wrote about Italian-American Dr. Fauci.
The UNICO National motto is “service above self,” and our scholarship winners most certainly live this mantra. The letters and $1,000 checks were presented at the Verona High School Award Ceremony on Tuesday, June 15. An additional scholarship was added for 2021 in loving memory of UNICO Verona Chapter Member Lawrence Colombo who passed away in late December 2020.

- Alati Family Scholarship – Jeffrey Monacelli Jr., Verona High School
- Msgr. Capozzelli Scholarship – Joshua Steven Vargas, Verona High School
- Nicholas J. Martini Scholarship – Madison Nigro, Verona High School
- Labor Day 5-K Classic Scholarship – Geena Anne Klinger, Verona High School (not pictured)
- Brian Piccolo Athletic Scholarship – Cole Martin, Verona High School
- Lawrence Colombo Memorial Scholarship – Steven Tafuri, Verona High School
We are thankful to the Scholarship Committee members: Pam Riley Blake, Vincenzo Cappello, Nicki Carpinelli, Mickey Lawrence and chairperson Father Jerry Racioppi. The Committee is grateful to Lisa Torchia and Tayelor Barrett at Verona High School who were great help in working through paperwork submission and follow-up.
