Verona High School’s wrestlers scored a decisive 47-24 win over Colonia yesterday.

Jayden Czupak (195 pounds) kicked things off with a victory over Shawn Amer in just 90 seconds. Then there were a few stumbles before Matt Steitz (126) defeated Xavier Lavoura in 3:50.

That inspired a string over Verona wins as Derek Bernardino (132) secured a fall in 2:42 over Michael Kalfa, Jake Ferry (138) defeated Jibreel Abduelal in 5:05, Dean Palmer (145) made quick work of Spiro Theologis and Tyler DaCosta (152) bested Vincent Diaz in 3:31.

John Pavia (170) sealed the Verona win with 16-1 decision over Michael Torres.

The result moves Verona’s record to 2-2 on the season. The boys host West Essex tonight at 6 p.m. and you can watch the meet here. Verona takes on long-time rival Nutley on Friday.
