Town Switching Alert Platforms

The Township of Verona is switching its emergency and community alerts from Nixle to Rave Mobile’s Smart911 app in mid-April. The town sent out an email about the switch today and notified residents that the new system has been pre-populated with residential landline numbers in town. Cell phone users and businesses will have to put their numbers into the system themselves.

Like Nixle, Smart911 will let the town push out alerts on emergencies. But it could help Verona’s dispatchers to better pinpoint the location of an emergency if someone calls in on a cell phone because the cell phone can be associated with a physical address, like your home. The Smart911 system can also collect information that can facilitate a response, like a known medical condition or the cell phone user’s language. When you register on Smart911, you get to choose how much–or how little–information you want to share.
