Mr. John “Jack” Smith, 70, died suddenly on February 22, 2021 at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge.

A funeral mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Lakeside Ave., Verona on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 10 a.m. Face masks and social distancing are required. Interment will be private.

Born in Newark, he grew up in Belleville before moving to Verona over 40 years ago. He graduated from Belleville High School with the Class of 1969 and earned a bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University.

Jack had a long career as an insurance broker. He developed an expertise in environmental coverage and as a result spoke at many seminars and conferences throughout the years. He also worked as a consultant in energy sales.

Jack was active as an athletic coach for the Verona Recreation Department for many years and enjoyed playing softball in the adult men’s summer league. He got such satisfaction of being able to teach each child on the team he coached, especially his own children.

He will be remembered for his love of family, friends and life and his strong sense of community service. Jack was an avid Yankee fan and so enjoyed being a grandfather (Ah-Pa) these past three and half years. He loved playing the guitar and spending time with his wife and friends.

Jack is predeceased by his parents, John and Ann (nee McCoy) Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Karen (nee Dougherty) Smith; loving children, Sean Smith, Cassidy Smith Perna (Matt) and Shannon Smith; and his cherished grandchildren, Logan, Colin and baby Perna due in April.  He is also survived by his twin brother, Robert Smith (Sue); in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Verona Rescue Squad would be greatly appreciated.
