On Saturday, January 23, Verona Cub Scout Pack 32 held their annual Pinewood Derby. As with almost everything this past year, the event needed to be run in a very different manner due to the pandemic. The location of the race was changed from VHS to the First Congregational Church of Verona, Pack 32’s sponsoring organization. Only small groups consisting of four scouts, plus one parent each, could be in the building at any given time.

What didn’t change is that the Pack 32 Cub Scouts made great cars that they were able to watch race down the track in competition. A good time was had by all, albeit in small groups instead of the entire pack being together at the same time.
As is the tradition, each scout was provided with a Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby kit containing a wooden block, 4 wheels, and nails for axles. Completed cars had to weigh 5oz. or less, and have the official BSA wheels. The block could be cut, shaped, sanded, and painted by the scout in any design. Cars were placed at the top of the track and relied on gravity and clever weight placement to race down the track and across the finish line.
The scouts’ cars looked great, as did the scouts in full uniform and masks. The Pack 32 leadership is very proud of not only the scouts’ great attitudes, but of their strict adherence to the pandemic related protocols including social distancing, masks, hand sanitizers, temperature checks, and a very cold room due to the exterior doors being kept open for fresh air ventilation.
Pack 32 wishes to thank Verona Troop 2 Leaders Michael Stockelberg and Brian Donnelly for running the races, and Casella Sons and Moving Service for transporting the track from storage to the church.
