Jane O’Neil is the unofficial poet laureate of Verona. (She’s also the chief ice cream cake decorator at The Towne Scoop and the one who keeps Santa looking spiffy in the window of Lakeside Deli.) She has put the year that was into verse:
This is a year we’d all like to forget,
With it’s terrible pandemic that’s not over yet,
Every part of the world has now been infected,
New cases keep coming as the experts projected,
They’ve made a vaccine, so at long last there’s hope,
You must follow guidelines and continue to cope.
Too many people still don’t wear a mask,
What made them decide that is too much to ask,
Either they are selfish or just do not care,
No one should be unwilling to do their fair share.
The fires, the floods, riots, turmoil and stress,
Year twenty-twenty has been a big mess.
Go away twenty-twenty, leave that all far behind,
Our nation needs healing, we need peace of mind.
And now is the time to give kindness attention,
We must stop the violence, the bias, the dissension.
After enduring such a horrible year,
Young or old, rich or poor, just be thankful you’re here.
