This is for all of you who are new to Verona, and every who might have forgotten Verona’s snow rules since the last storm. Whether we get a few feet on Wednesday or a few inches, Verona has a few snow rules that you’ll need to follow:

  1. No parking: Not during the day while it’s snowing or overnight. Getting all vehicles off the street allows town employees to clear snow as efficiently as possible. If you can’t park at home, you’ll have to put your vehicle in one of the municipal lots.
  2. Shovel soon: You’ve got to clear your sidewalks within 24 hours after the snow stops and you can’t push or blow snow into the road. That just makes it harder to clear them.
  3. Clear the hydrant: If you’ve got a hydrant near your house, dig it out. If there’s a fire and your hydrant is clear, the Verona Fire Department can fight the fire that much faster.
  4. Spare 911: If your power goes out, call PSE&G and not 911 or the main number for the Verona Police Department. Save 911 for the emergencies like a tree falling on your property or downed utility poles and wires.

Now for the common sense stuff: Charge your flashlights, cell phones, and computers now. Make sure you have extra batteries if you need them. If you don’t have to drive–don’t. To prevent a buildup of potentially deadly carbon monoxide, make sure the exhaust vents for your portable generators, dryer and furnace are clear. Test your carbon monoxide detector. If the storm does damage your property, take pictures of it when the storm stops for an insurance claim. You do not always need a police report.
