The Verona High School football program has been shut down as a result of a COVID-19 case. The team was to have travelled to Boonton on Friday night for its final regular season game.
“After careful consideration of the circumstances, the Montclair Department of Health has provided the school with a ‘recommendation that all student athletes participating in the high school football program quarantine for 14 days from last exposure to the positive case’ (November 17 through December 1),” Superintendent Dr. Rui Dionisio said in an email just sent. “Additionally, all football coaches will be asked to quarantine and adhere to the Montclair Department of Health’s recommendations. Students asked to quarantine may resume in-person learning and school activities on December 2, 2020. All football practices and games are canceled and will not be rescheduled as the quarantine period extends beyond the last possible scheduling date of November 29, 2020 established by the NJSIAA.”
The school, however, will resume its hybrid learning schedule on Friday. “Students in Cohort A may return to in-person learning tomorrow for periods 5-8 unless the student is a member of the football team who is required to quarantine,” the email said.
Dionisio sent out an email late Wednesday night that VHS would be on remote learning Thursday while the Montclair Health Department did contact tracing on a VHS COVID case. That email did not specify whether the case involved a student or staff member.
