Verona football running back Frank Riggio has been nominated for the 2020 USA Football Heart of a Giant Award, presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and New York Giants. This award highlights tristate high school players for their work ethic and love for the game. Riggio was one of nine football players nominated this week by their coaches for their commitment, teamwork, will, character and dedication. USA Football is an organization dedicated to developing youth football in the United States.

“Frank is one of our team captains who does everything he can for the betterment of the team, he’s a leader on and off the field,” said Kevin Batty, Verona’s head football coach. “Frank has taken on a leadership role amongst his teammates reminding them about the importance of following the guidelines.”

Riggio was a key factor in Verona’s winning the N2 state football title last November after an undefeated season, despite his own injuries. “I got hurt last year during our state champion run, and I went through the pain,” Riggio said. “We ended up winning states, and I was the leading touchdown leader in the state of New Jersey.”

The award winners will be determined by voting from the public, and you can vote for Riggio here (nominees are listed alphabetically). The voting period is open until November 8, at 11:59 p.m.

Overall, there will be 11 total finalists and each finalist will receive $1,000 for his high school’s football program, with the grand prize winner’s school getting an additional $4,000. The grand prize winner will be selected based on a video submission stating why he has the Heart of a Giant.
