Since 2013, Newman Cares has put on a block party, with multiple live local bands, on Newman Avenue to raise money for a local charity.
This year, the nonprofit selected Team Zoey as its charity, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made it hard to hold an in-person music party. So on Saturday, September 26, Newman Cares will live-stream four local bands on YouTube, allowing everyone to enjoy the music from the comfort and safety of their own home.
The participating bands are The Dad Band at 1 p.m., 3WAY at 2:15 p.m., Bare Bonez at 3:30 p.m. and TCP at 4:45 p.m. You can watch all the bands through Newman Cares’s website.
Verona-based Newman Cares is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has raised more than $75,000 for a wide variety of charities since its founding, including the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Heart Association, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Minette’s Angels and the NJ Sharing Network. You can donate to this year’s Newman Cares event through its website, or by mailing a check to
“Newman Cares, Inc.” at 74 Newman Ave., Verona, NJ 07044. Please add “Zoeython 2020” in the memo area.
Team Zoey was created a decade ago to raise money for the Progeria Research Foundation to find a cure and develop treatments for all the children suffering from rapid aging disease progeria. Verona resident Zoey Penny, now a middle school student, was diagnosed with the disease when she was a toddler. Team Zoey usually relies on golf outings and a 5K race for its fundraising.
