The Verona chapter of UNICO National celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. And what a year it has been — for everyone! Through the pandemic, the chapter continues to live out the mission of “service above self.” UNICO National is the largest Italian-American service organization, which has chapters all across the United States, raising money for great causes and helping keep the history of Italian-Americans alive.
The Verona chapter recently provided money to two local restaurants – Miele’s and Bella Gente – which prepared meals to healthcare workers at Mountainside Hospital Montclair and nurses at St. Barnabas Medical Center Livingston. Also, in late April, financial support was given to the Verona Rescue Squad, Verona Fire Department Benevolent Association and the Verona PBA Local 72.
In addition, our annual scholarship program will once again award money to high school seniors who plan to attend college in the fall. Students must be Verona residents and have a completed application (including letter of recommendation, school transcript and appropriate essay) submitted by Friday, May 22. Verona High School seniors should submit the completed application to Ms. Diane Newman in the Counseling Department. Seniors for any other high school (who are Verona residents) should submit their paperwork directly to [email protected]
This year, five students will each potentially receive $1,000. The scholarships available in 2020 are:
- Alati Family Scholarship
- Msgr. Capozzelli Scholarship
- Nicholas J. Martini Scholarship
- Labor Day 5-K Classic Scholarship
- Brian Piccolo Athletic Scholarship
Requirements and complete details for each program is listed within the application (Form 1, Form 2). For more information on UNICO Verona, check us out on Facebook at “Verona UNICO” or email us at [email protected]
Stay safe! Ciao!
