Oscar Meyer launched the challenge, but Tina Caridad and her neighbors on Depot Street and Parkhurst Place are bringing it to Verona this Saturday.

The giant food company invited its customers to share a meal with their neighbors over a front yard cookout on May 2–and share it on social media. For every tweet made with the hashtag #FrontYardCookout, Oscar Meyer will donate a meal to Feeding America, on top of the million meals it has already pledged to fund. Feeding America is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that together feed more than 46 million people.

Caridad, who is known to many Veronans for producing sports awards at C & J Trophies & Promotion on Bloomfield Avenue, thought the front yard cookout would be a good way to lift spirits after more than a month of isolation imposed by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. So there will be cooking on Depot Street, the street where West Essex Building Supply is located, as well as in the driveways in back of Depot on Pinehurst.

“We could all use a little pick-me-up these days,” says Caridad, “and this is a socially distant way to do it.”
