Dear Verona Community:

It is with great sadness that must I share that Verona has lost two of our own to complications related to the 2019 novel Coronavirus. (COVID-19) Both residents succumbed to the illness at local hospitals.

On behalf of the Township Council and all municipal staff, I offer our most heartfelt condolences for the Verona families which have suffered the greatest pain in one of the most difficult times that our local, state, and national communities have faced in recent history.

In a tight-knit town such as ours, a tragedy for one family is a loss for the entire community. It is a devastating reminder of the preciousness of life. We ask those who are close to the grieving families to please offer the supports that you can in order to lessen their burdens. Please know that the Township of Verona is offering anything within our capabilities to assist you.

For privacy reasons, we cannot release the identities of the deceased community members or those of their families. We ask that you follow the same practice on social media until the families are ready for this information to be public. Please respect their needs as our town mourns together.

Our somber update for today is a profound reminder of the seriousness of our current challenges. As such, out of respect for these two lives, we will not be providing case numbers in this release. Those requiring this this information may visit https://essexcountynj.org/covid-19-municipality/ for statistical information from Essex County.

Please contact me if there is anything that we can do to help our residents. Continue to be present for one another. Our collective strength will lead us through this.

Most respectfully,

MATTHEW CAVALLO

Township Manager
