Verona resident Miriam Shankman will be teaching a free evening class in chi kung, tai chi and meditation at the Cedar Grove Public Library. The class will be held at 6:45 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

The Cedar Grove library has offered Wednesday and Thursday classes in the Chinese exercise and healing techniques for some time. Shankman began studying and practicing them in 1995, and she began teaching them 18 years ago.

Shankman says teaching is more than a job for her. “There’s nothing more gratifying than when students approach me after class to say that practice has made a difference in their lives,” she said. “And I understand because it has made such a difference in mine.”

“Unlike some more aggressive exercises, tai chi and chi king are appropriate for people of all ages,” Shankman said. “So it’s never too late to learn and we can continue practicing for the rest of our lives.”

The Cedar Grove library is located in the Cedar Grove municipal building on Pompton Avenue. For more information, you can call the library at 973-239-1447.
