The Verona High School girls basketball team started strong against Glen Ridge yesterday afternoon and finished even stronger, with a 37-32 win.
Verona put up 12 points to the Ridgers’ 9 in the first period, and by the half, the Maroon & White were up 18-16. Emily Baumgard, a freshman, led the scoring for Verona at that point with six. Glen Ridge came back in the third period and moved to a 28-25 lead. Verona wasn’t done for the day, however, and delivered nine unanswered points to take back the game. The ultimate win improved Verona’s record to 3-6 on the season.
Melanie Naeris led the overall scoring for Verona, as she often does, with 11 points, while Maddie Gallagher dominated other aspects of play thanks to her 15 rebounds, nine points and two steals. Lauren Kobernick had six points and seven rebounds.
The girls travel to Caldwell on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
