The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona will kick off this year’s Verona Fights Hunger Week on Sunday, October 20. The town-wide food drive will run through Saturday, October 26.

Verona Fights Hunger Week is a town wide supersized food drive that brings together local businesses, civic groups, charities, religious organizations and schools in the fight against hunger in our community. This year marks the 6th anniversary of the event, in which the town participates in raising donations of food and money, that benefit the food pantry at Church of the Holy Spirit and the Human Needs Food Pantry. Since 2013, the Juniors collected over 6,500 bags of food and $14,000 in monetary donations for local food pantries.

Items needed for donation this year included healthy breakfast cereals, healthy canned goods, condiments, boxed milk, Ensure, toiletries, personal care items, and laundry detergent.

The success of Verona Fights Hunger Week stems from the generosity of Verona neighbors and local businesses.

There are many ways to help! Fill up a bag of food and bring it to a collection bin in town. The collection bins will be located at the Community Center, the Verona Library and Town Hall.

Verona elementary school students will receive a bag to fill in their book bags as well. The bags can be returned to the schools all week.

Kings Supermarket, a generous sponsor of the program, will host shop and drops at their Verona location beginning Sunday, October 20 and ending Friday, October 25. Walgreens will also host a shop and drop on Sunday, October 20, Tuesday, October 22, and Friday, October 25.

This year’s events begin with a Kick-off event at the Verona Inn on Sunday, October 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. Local restaurants will also be supporting the cause, hosting Dine Out For Hunger events throughout the week. Be sure to enjoy lunch or dinner at the following Verona restaurants and dine out for a good cause:

  • Monday, 10/21 – Frank Anthony’s Gourmet Italian Restaurant (dinner)
  • Tuesday, 10/22 – Blue Hippo (lunch) and Guac Spot (dinner)
  • Wednesday, 10/23 – Ariane Kitchen and Bar (dinner)
  • Thursday, 10/24 – Lakeside Deli family take out (dinner)

The week concludes on Saturday, October 26 at 10 a.m. on the steps of Town Hall when volunteers fill an entire moving truck donated by Casella and Sons with the bags of food collected during the week. Casella and Sons has been a long-standing partner and supporter of Verona Fights Hunger Week, donating a large truck each year to transport the hundreds of bags of food.
