Forest Avenue School’s students, parents, faculty and officials gathered on Wednesday, October 3, to celebrate International Walk to School Day. Walk to School Day is a global event that encourages healthy lifestyles and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The day marked Verona’s 11th year participating in this nationwide event, and the turnout did not disappoint.
The Forest Avenue community gathered at two intersections where the students participated in a brief discussion about the importance of pedestrian safety and the positive impact that walking has on our environment. From there everyone proceeded to the school and assembled on the blacktop for a school picture. School spirit was abundant as the students smiled with pride and donned their forest avenue clothing or sported the school color, “forest” green.
The Verona Environmental Commission also sponsors this event for Verona students with a poster contest that challenges students to think about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making lifestyle decisions that benefit the environment. This year the contest was open to all fourth graders. Next year, Walk to School Day will be held on Wednesday, October 7.
