If you are counting, the Verona High School football team has scored 124 points in only the first month of the 2019 season. The latest addition to that count was its 39-0 win over Newark Collegiate Academy on Saturday.

Frank Riggio delivered the first touchdown of the day, just as he did in both previous Verona games. Shane Lawless got the two-point conversion and then Riggio returned to the end zone a few minutes laster to make the score 15-0 before the first quarter was even over. When Newark Collegiate, a public charter high school, tried to punt the ball away as the quarter closed, James Haveron blocked it for a Verona safety.

Verona continued to dominate in the second quarter. The Hillbillies sent Steven Luehs on for a field goal and he delivered a 21 yarder. As the buzzer sounded for the first half, Riggio went in for his third touchdown of the day, giving Verona a 27-0 lead.

Riggio pushed the scoring to 33-0 Verona in the third quarter. Then quarterback Cael Zebrowski turned his attention to Patrick Yeates, who went the distance for Verona’s final TD. When Newark Collegiate tried to rally, Christian Dionisio picked off the pass to end it.

Verona will host Shabazz High School on Friday, October 4. The game starts at 7 p.m.
