The Verona High School girls soccer team scored a commanding 8-1 win over East Side High School on Senior Night, with scoring spread across all the grades on the varsity team.
Gabi Montagna, a senior, got Verona on the board first with a on direct kick at the 16:46 mark. A minute later, sophomore Emma Hogan shot a rocket from 15-yard line to put Verona up by two. Before the end of the first half, the score would be 5-0 Verona, thanks to additional goals from Alana Holton, Brooke Rieneker and Emily Bosco–a sophomore, freshman and sophomore, respectively.
East Side regrouped a bit at the half, and got its one and only goal at the 38:25 mark. But the rally didn’t last long. Montagna fired in her second goal of the evening to put Verona up 6-1. And as the match was winding to a close, senior Maddi Gallagher scored by following up on a teammate’s shot and pushing past the goalie. Verona’s final point was courtesy of junior Karen Andre, who delivered a high looping shot over the East Side goalie’s head.
The win improved the Lady Hillbillies’ record to 4-4. Verona hosts West Orange on Friday, beginning at 4 p.m.
