The Verona and Essex Offroad mountain biking teams are hosting a biking event and movie night on Friday, September 27, to get more local kids interested in their sport.
The evening will start with a ride at 6 p.m. at Cedar Grove Community Park, 99 Slattery Drive in Cedar Grove. Then there’s something they are calling a “bike rodeo” at 7 p.m., followed at 7:30 p.m. by a screening of Return to Earth by Anthill Films, which the teams say is “Rated ‘G’ (for gnarly).”
Tickets are $10 per person or $25 for a family of three or more. The rain date, if one is needed, is Saturday, September 28. All riders must wear helmets. For more details, see the teams’ Facebook page.
Essex Offroad was formed two years ago with more than 25 student-athletes in grades 6 to 12 and six coaches from all over Essex County. Verona students now account for more than 25% of the Essex Offroad team, so earlier this year, they organized as an individual town team. The two teams, which are part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), will train together from November through May and race at venues around the state against other middle school and high school mountain biking teams.
