Verona fell to Madison in the North 2 Group 2 final on Friday, ending what had been an historic season for Verona baseball: The Hillbillies went into sectionals as the #2 seed, and made it all the way to the finals for the first time since 1979.

Madison starting pitcher Michael Maybaum threw a two-hit shutout, going the full seven innings in front of a packed crowd at Paul “Doc” Goeltz Field. Army-commit Will Hart broke the scoreless tie for Madison in the top of the fifth inning, taking Pierce Coppola deep to left field. Madison added two more runs in the inning, as Walter Brownlee doubled and Vincent Costa and Michael May had RBI singles.

Verona left several runners on base throughout the game, including a second inning leadoff triple from Will Gaccione that sailed over the right fielder’s glove. Pierce Coppola went six innings giving up three runs on six hits, four walks and eight strikeouts. Nick Coppola relieved him, pitching one inning with one strikeout. Verona finished off the season at 18-10.
