Ashley, Skrivanic, Fogarty Top Essex Track Championship

Kate Ashley ended her Verona High School running career at the Essex County Track & Field Championship with an incredible 800m performance of 2:19, cementing her place as the Essex County girls spring track 800m champion. Only four months ago, on January 21, Ashley was also crowned Essex County girls winter track 800m champion. She will run track at the College of the Holy Cross in the fall.

There were also first place finishes for the Verona High School boys track & field team at the Essex championship, which was held at West Orange High School on Thursday and Friday. Isaac Skrivanic became the Essex County javelin champ, throwing 167-10 (see the video below), and Owen Fogarty is the Essex County pole vault champion, clearing 13’6.

The VHS girls track & field team finished fourth in a field of 24 teams at the championships, which placed them as the top small school in Essex County. In addition to her first place finish in the 800m, Ashley also finished third in the 400m. Pole vaulters Erin Petrino and Lily Benanchietti got second and third places with respective vaults of 9’6” and 8’6”. Gillian O’Donnell finished fourth in javelin with a throw of 99’.

Ninth grader Lauren Kobernick finished seventh in 400m hurdles and sophomore Bridget O’Donnell had two very impressive distance races with a 5:39.48 in the 1600m and 12:20 in the 3200m. Cayla Okafor had two strong sprint performances, with a 13:38 in the 100m and 27.26 in the 200m. 

On the boys side, Skrivanic earned third place in shot put with a throw of 47-02.25. Senior Mike Maglione ran a personal best in the mile at 4:35.06 and placed seventh in the 1600m.
