Under New Jersey election law, the candidates for Verona’s May 14 Town Council election are required to file campaign finance disclosure reports on April 15 and May 3 before the election, and after the election on June 3.

Three of Verona’s five candidates met the April 15 deadline, filing with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC). The filings by Alex Roman and Michael Nochimson were posted to ELEC on April 22 and April 23 respectively.

The candidates were to have filed either an A-1 or an R-1 form. The former is for campaigns that do not intend to spend more than $5,100 for this election, while the latter must be used by campaigns that expect to exceed that amount. On an R-1, candidates must detail how much they have raised, identify individual donations of more than $300 and loans made to the campaign, as well as how they are spending their money. If a candidate who filed an A-1 gets a contribution of more than $300, they have to file an additional report to document that.

John Fio Rito’s R-1 report discloses the receipt of $10,275, largely through a $10,000 loan from Fio Rito to his campaign. It indicated that he has spent $8,485.38 on campaign clothing, banner and lawn signs, as well as campaign management.

Christine McGrath’s R-1 indicates that she has raised $7,148 through donations of $300 or less, and $2,690 in contributions in excess of $300, as well as a $500 loan, for a total of $10,338. As of April 15, she had spent $3,778.51, on lawn signs, her website and other campaign material.

Michael Nochimson’s R-1 report shows total contributions of $15,929, including $3,719 in donations of less than $300 and $7,210 in donation in excess of that amount. Nochimson also lent his campaign $5,000. He has spent $9,505 on this campaign so far, but his report did not detail how that was spent.

John Quattrocchi filed an A-1, indicating that he does not intend to spend more than $5,100 for this election. Quattrocchi also filed a C-1 form on April 7 disclosing $2,322.43 in individual contributions of more than $300.

Alex Roman filed an A-1. He also sent a text message to MyVeronaNJ that he has entirely self-funded his campaign and has spent $950 on advertising, $366 on flyers and $557 on lawn signs.
