Friday’s overnight deluge shifted Saturday’s Verona High School varsity baseball game against Belleville to the turf field at VHS, and the Hillbillies played the home field advantage for all it was worth.
Kyle McCaffrey, a sophomore, was on the mound for Verona and he got 10 strikeouts while allowing just five hits.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Tom Radigan, another sophomore, delivered a double to right that scored Gabe Quagliata. Nick Kozachuck followed that with an RBI that upped the score to 2-0 Verona.
Belleville came back to threaten in the sixth, getting runners to second and third bases, but McCaffrey shut the Buccaneers’ rally down. Radigan sealed the game for Verona in the seventh with a hit that got Adam Weiss home and a 3-0 victory for VHS.
The win improves Verona baseball’s record to 5-2. The Hillbillies will be away at Cedar Grove on Monday.
In other Verona sports action on Satuday, boys lacrosse scored a decisive 16-1 win over West Orange, while girls lacrosse fell to Glen Ridge.
