If you have been in the habit of bringing your leaf bags and yard waste to the leaf dump on Commerce Court near the Public Works garage, you’re going to have to make some changes.
Municipal officials sent out word on Friday that the leaf dump has been closed. Permanently.
The leaf dump was never actually owned by Verona, but rather private property and its owner terminated Verona’s use license at the start of this year. In September 2017, the Town Council disclosed that the lot’s owner was thinking of building an affordable housing development on the site, as well as on a heavily wooded lot on Mount Prospect Avenue at the edge of Eagle Rock Reservation that he also owns. No development plans have yet been presented for either site.
Verona, which is negotiating a new dumping arrangement with an outside company, will continue to collect yard waste at residents’ homes on Wednesdays. (You can get the full curbside collection calendar through the free Remyndr app that Verona uses.) You can also compost your leaves and yard waste at home, following the directions on the Verona Environmental Commission’s website.
