It’s budget workshop time in Verona, which is your chance to learn where Verona’s municipal budget could be going up–or down–before it is set in stone. Verona will be holding budget workshops on Tuesday, March 5; Thursday, March 7 and Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Council chambers in the municipal building.
Since 2016, Verona has used a “zero-based” approach to each new budget. Instead of automatically tacking an increase onto the previous year’s spending to cover a perceived higher cost of government, the manager and Council have asked every department to build their new budgets from zero. At the workshops, department managers will be telling the Council about how they managed costs last year and what their needs will be for the year ahead.
Verona’s tax levy and tax rate rose last year after three years of minimal increases to the levy and a flat tax rate, mostly because of the debt service on the turf fields at the Hilltop and the library renovation.
Information on this year’s budget will be posted to the budget information page of the town website. The meeting will be videotaped for presentation on Verona’s municipal YouTube channel.
