The Verona High School girls basketball team ended the week on a very high note. After trouncing Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Thursday 50-26, the Lady Hillbillies beat Glen Ridge in Glen Ridge, earning themselves a co-conference championship with the Ridgers.
Melanie Naeris led the scoring for both team in the Glen Ridge contest with 18 points and Desiree Meyer contributed nine points. Brianna Horton and Kylee Gallagher tied for rebounds with four apiece.
The two games have gotten Meyer ever closer to 1,000-point status. She had 18 points–including four 3-pointers in the SPF game, and another nine against Glen Ridge, bringing her high school career total to 982. The last girls basketball player to hit 1,000 was Amanda Langan in 2013.
There still are scoring opportunities for Meyer. Verona plays in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2 Group 2 playoff on Monday as the No. 7 seed in the bracket. Verona, which has a 17-6 record this year, will be hosting No. 10 Fort Lee for a 4 p.m. start.
