Verona Township officials are letting anyone who receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that they will be receiving their February benefits early because of the continued federal government shutdown.

Recipients who received a SNAP benefit in January and were scheduled to receive the benefit again in February should have received them today, January 17, on their Families First Card. There are 730,000 SNAP recipients in New Jersey.

SNAP recipients should know, however, that this distribution will be the SNAP benefit for the entire month of February. New Jersey state officials are also warning that there is no guarantee from the federal government that benefits will be available beyond February if the shutdown continues.

Verona residents who have questions about their SNAP benefits should contact the state’s Division of Family Development, which administers the program.
