The girls opened with a 54-37 defeat of METS Charter and followed that with a narrow 42-40 win over Mount Saint Dominic Academy. Thursday was a 50-18 blowout of Shabazz High School that saw Desiree Meyer deliver a blistering five 3-pointers.

Meyer, who is a senior, already has 36 points to her credit this season, followed closely by fellow senior Brianna Horton with 28. Horton recently announced that she will be continuing her basketball career at Wilkes University, an NCAA Division III school in Pennsylvania.

The boys team, meanwhile, opened the season with a 34-28 win over Cedar Grove before moving on to a 50-42 defeat of Weequahic. Then they hosted West Essex for a game that was a nail-biter before becoming a Verona victory.

The Hillbillies and Knights were knotted up at 22-22 going into the fourth quarter, but Verona turned on the jets to deliver a 37-29 win. VHS’ Jeremy Boub led the scoring with 12 points, followed by Derek Jocelyn with 10, which included two 3-pointers. And there was this spectacular dunk by Jake McConnachie.

The boys travel to Bernards on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start, while Verona’s girls host their Bernards counterparts at 11:30.
