The Verona High School volleyball put another one in the win column, defeating Cresskill 25-18, 25-16 in the 2018 NJSIAA Group 1 quarterfinals.
Playing in front of a home-gym crowd that cheered loudly for every Verona rally, the Lady Hillbillies ran the game like a well-oiled machine. Brooke Cooney led the team in kills, with 13, while Verona showed team-wide strength at the service line: Kate Ryan led with eight, Hunter Coppola and Kelly Waterman had six apiece and Daniela Trujillo had five.
Verona, which came into the playoffs as the top seed in Group 1, will face New Providence at home on Wednesday for the sectional title. The 13th-seeded Pioneers are this season’s Cinderella team, after they upset both #4 Wood-Ridge in round 2 and #5 Leonia in the quarterfinals, taking both games to three sets. The other sectional game pits #2 Bogota against #6 Kinnelon, also on Wednesday night. The winners of the sectional games will advance to the Group 1 championship at William Paterson University on Saturday.
