The Verona High School fall sports season kicked off yesterday with a win for girls varsity soccer, a tie for boys varsity soccer and a loss for girls tennis.
Girls soccer played at home and, due to the heat, the game was played in 20 minute quarters. Ally Madigan scored first, with just seconds left in in the first quarter. Fellow senior Sarah Carlucci scored with five minutes left in the second quarter and Boonton added to Verona’s lead with an “own” goal, making the score Verona 3 – Boonton 0 at the half.
Verona continued its march to victory in the third quarter, with Carlucci scoring again off her left foot. With 1 minute left in Q3, Lara Tole took a shot on goal. It rebounded, but Maria Gabriele caught the rebound and passed to Grace Madigan who scored her first varsity goal. Tole took two more shots on goal in Q4 and both were successful, making the final score Verona 7 – Boonton 0. Colleen Whelan was in goal for Verona, and had three saves to her credit.
Boys soccer, meanwhile, traveled to Boonton and came away with a 2-2 tie. Aidan Murphy and Jake Weber scored for Verona, with assists from Brian McEvoy and Grady Short.
Girls tennis played in Mountain Lakes and fell to that squad 5-0. Verona’s first singles player this season is Megan Forrest, with Desiree Meyer at second singles and Ashley Baumgard at third singles. Gillian O’Donnell and Sara Sexton make up Verona’s first doubles team this year.
