For years, one of the favorite moments of spring in Verona has been when the three large ornamental cherry trees in front of F.N. Brown elementary school bloom. Unfortunately, next spring, we’ll only have two-thirds of the grand display.
According to F.N. Brown’s principal, Dr. Anthony Lanzo, the cherry tree closest to the auditorium door had a serious insect infestation that had done a great deal of damage to the tree and it had to be taken down. “It posed a safety concern with its structure,” he said, adding that the overall tree had been weakened.
Right now, there’s nothing left but a stump, but Dr. Lanzo says it will be removed shortly and another ornamental cherry tree will be planted in that location. “The cherry blossom trees on the FNB landscape are beautiful,” Dr. Lanzo added. “We are so lucky especially when they are in bloom.”
