The League of Women Voters is hosting an event next week to help voters meet the candidates running for the congressional district that includes Verona.

The retirement announcement by Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ11) earlier this year means that our district is having a highly contested primary for the first time in two decades. There are five candidates running for the Republican nomination–Patrick Allocco, Peter DeNeufville, Antony GheeMartin Hewitt and Jay Webber–and five running for the Democratic nod–Mitchell CobertTamara HarrisAlison HeslinMikie Sherrill and Mark Washburne. The League’s calendar note does not indicate which of the 10 will be in attendance.

The candidate night for the 11th congressional district will be Wednesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. at the Livingston Community Center, 204 Hillside Ave., in Livingston.

May 29 is the deadline to apply to vote by mail in the June 5 primary (use this form). You can also apply in person to the Essex County Clerk until 3 p.m. on the day before the election. You can now vote by mail in New Jersey for any reason. The Essex County Clerk is located at 465 Martin Luther King Blvd., room 247, in Newark. The phone number is (973) 621.4921 or you can email [email protected].
