The Verona High School boys tennis team lost the opening round of the Essex County Tournament on Wednesday, but roared back in the consolation round.
In the opener, VHS tennis was overpowered by Montclair Kimberley Academy, falling 5-0. But the team’s next match at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center in Newark was a different story. Though Andrew Siegelin fell to West Orange’s Karan Belday at first singles, every other Verona player easily scaled the Mountaineers for a 4-1 win.
At second singles, Henry Noren defeated Chris Randolph 6-1, 6-0, while Brian Feury, Verona’s third singles, beat West Orange’s Xavier Abelson 6-1, 6-2. Verona’s doubles performance was equally strong. The first doubles duo of Max Batson and Henry Wertz defeated Matt Carlos and Tanveer Qureshi 6-2, 6-1, while VHS’ second doubles pairing of Matt McNally and Justin Munjack won their match with Shrey Sanghvi and Wolfgang Scheitinger 6-2, 6-4.
The boys tennis team’s next regular match is today against Pequannock on the VHS tennis courts at 4 p.m. As a result of the consolation round win, Verona gets a chance for further ECT redemption on Saturday morning. It will play Cedar Grove in an match that starts at 9 a.m. at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center, which is located at 20 Heller Parkway inside Branch Brook Park.
