Softball Falls To The Mount

Renata Primmer got the Verona High School softball team on the scoreboard in the opening minutes of yesterday’s game against Mount Saint Dominic Academy, but the Lady Hillbillies couldn’t hold on to that momentum for the win. The Mount scored once in the third inning and again in the sixth to take the game 2-1.

Primmer, a senior who has signed to continue her softball career with Division III Drew University, singled and drove in Brooke Anquillare for a run in Wednesday’s game. Melanie Naeris, a freshman starter, got a hit, as did senior Julia Rigney.

Christina Colon was on the mound for Verona, and gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven. Colon, a junior, has 59 strikeouts this season from the seven games in which she has pitched and has given up just 20 hits.

The loss drops Verona to 1-6 on the season. The team was moved up to a tougher division this year after coming in second to Cedar Grove in the NJSIAA North I Group I tournament finals in 2017. Verona softball is also playing this year without Amber Reed, a star in past seasons who suffered an injury playing basketball over the winter.

Softball was supposed to have played West Essex on Thursday afternoon, but that game was postponed because of the weather. The team now has a double-header in Wayne on Saturday.
