Put one in the win column for Verona High School baseball: The boys defeated Belleville 5-3 in a noon-time home game today.

Freshman Pierce Coppola made his varsity debut today and he definitely made the most of it. In his four innings on the mound, he struck out seven and had just one hit and no runs scored. When he came up to bat, he delivered a double and two RBIs for Verona, the first of which brought two Hillbillies home.

Steve Priscoe, a senior, had two hits for Verona, a single and a double, and also had a turn on the mound in the seventh inning. Ian Metzger, a senior who will be playing for Division II Southern New Hampshire University next year, had one hit, as did Matt Monroe and Gabe Quagliata, both juniors.

Today’s win moves Verona’s record to 1-2 on the season. The Hillbillies will be hosting Montclair Kimberly Academy on Monday, April 9, with a 4 p.m. start.
