Joseph P. Ruggiero, 98, of Verona, N.J., passed away on March 1, 2018. Services will begin on Monday, March 5 at 9 a.m. at Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, with interment at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Upper Montclair. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com.

Born and raised in Montclair to the late Carmine and Carmela Ruggiero, Joseph lived in Verona for the past 68 years. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater under Gen. Patton with the First Division. He was a member of the 5th Ward Democratic Club of Montclair and the Cedar Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6255. For over 30 years, he worked with the Shade Tree Commission for the Township of Montclair, retiring in 1984.

Predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Ida, his parents, and eight siblings, he is survived by his loving children, Neil Ruggiero (Cheryl), Susan Burns (Paul), and Joseph Ruggiero (Lorraine); dear grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher (Natasha), Patrick, Kristina (Stephen), and Jaclyn; treasured great-grandsons, Lochlan and Dash; loving sister, Mildred Smith; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
