Last night was the third annual Hoops For Hope cancer fundraiser between the Verona and Cedar Grove High School girls basketball teams. All of the proceeds from the game went to two Cedar Grove Fire Department members who are battling cancer.
The teams battled as well last night. They were locked at 10 points apiece after the first period and Verona was up by only one point at the half. The Lady Hillbillies stretched that to a three-point lead in the third quarter before pulling way out in front in the fourth, to finish with a 52-43 win.
Cecila “CC” Courter led Verona’s scoring with 14 points, but Kylee Gallagher’s 12 points and eight rebounds were key to Verona in the stretch. Ava Fernandez was the high scorer for Cedar Grove with 15 points.
VHS will be back in action this afternoon in the second round of the Essex County Tournament. Verona scored an upset 41-30 victory over Nutley in the first round this past Sunday, and now faces No. 1 seed University High School. That game tips off in Newark at 2 p.m.
