We haven’t been able to ice skate on Verona Park Lake this winter, but the sub-freezing temperatures did make the ice strong enough for the Verona Fire Department to practice ice rescue training. The firefighters who were out on the ice on Saturday, February 3, were certified to the Technician level with this training.
The VFD is an all-volunteer force that has served Verona since 1909. It is is currently accepting applications for both volunteer and auxiliary firefighters. To be a volunteer firefighter, you must be at least 18 and no older than 46, and have lived in Verona for at least six months. If you are at least 16, you can join the VFD as an auxiliary member and then step up to full-fledged volunteer status later. The VFD provides all training and equipment. For more details on joining, see here.
