Girls Track Takes 2nd At SEC, Fogarty Wins Pole Vault

winter trackThe Verona High School girls winter track team took second place in a very competitive field of 15 teams at the SEC Championships Saturday, December 23, at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island. This year’s program included two new events, the novice sprint medley and novice distance medley, both of which were won by Verona athletes.

On the boys’ side, junior Frankie Lavery came home with a medal in the mile and sophomore Owen Fogarty won the pole vault for the Liberty Division, clearing 12 feet. The 4×400 team of Evan Huaman, Bryan McKeen, David Navarro and Vincent Hogan placed fourth and senior Aydin Sidali placed seventh overall in shot put.

3200m: Karishma Parekh, 13:43
Pole vault: Lily Benanchietti, 8’0”
High jump: Alex Holland, 4’8”
4 x 400m Relay: Olivia Fiore, Brianna Rigney, Kathleen Nagy and Kate Ashley, 4:24

Third Place Performances
Shot put: Alex Holland, 25’7”

Fourth Place Performances
800m: Kate Ashley, 2:34
1600m: Bridget O’Donnell, 6:10
3200m: Karina Squilanti, 14:28

Fifth Place Performances
800m: Brianna Rigney, 2:38

Sixth Place Performances
800m: Kathleen Nagy, 2:42

Novice race results:

Novice Sprint Medley: First Place
Olivia Vogel, Rebecca Siclari, Lara Tole and Clara Frizzi, 4:59

Novice Distance Medley: First Place
Gabi Montagna, Olivia Vogel, Clara Frizzi and Arianna Tietjen, 15:39

Both Verona track teams are now getting ready for the Essex County Relays on Wednesday, January 3, which will again be held at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island.
