The Verona High School girls soccer team went into yesterday’s game as the number 11 seed in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament–and came out with a very sweet upset. Led by freshman Karen Andre, who had a goal and an assist, VHS defeated number 6 seed Roselle Park, 3-2, in overtime.

Verona was definitely the underdog going into the playoffs, with an 8-10 season record under new coach Kerrin Goosman. But underdogs have funny way of showing bite when they need to. Verona stayed on Roselle Park’s tail and kept the scoring at 1-1 at the end of the first period. The Panthers scored another goal in the second period, but with the final seconds about to expire on the clock, Verona evened the game to 2-2. Sophomore Gabi Montagna put Verona over the top in OT.

Sarah Carlucci was Verona’s other scorer, and both Madison Gallagher and Maria Gabriele had an assist. Anna Rosinski was in goal for Verona and grabbed five saves.

The Verona girls move on to the quarterfinal round, where they will face number 3 seed McNair Academy. That game will be played in Jersey City on Thursday afternoon. The VHS boys soccer team was not as successful in its playoff opener, falling to Emerson Boro, 0-1, in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 tournament in Emerson.
