BaseballMagicRain, rain, go away: The wet weather has forced changes to several Verona events this weekend.

The West Essex Rail Trail cleanup that has been organized by the Verona and Cedar Grove environmental commissions and the Essex County Parks Department has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 2, from to Saturday, April 1. Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. to the parking lot of Aqua Products, 280 Grove Avenue in Cedar Grove. The cleanup, which will focus on the 1.3 mile section of the trail between Fairview Avenue in Verona and Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove, will run until noon. More details here.

Rain is also pushing around the sports calendar. The Verona High School baseball team’s home opener on the newly turfed Doc Goeltz Field has been delayed to noon Saturday from a 10 a.m. start. VHS will face Seton Hall Prep in that game and Verona’s fast-firing senior Collin Kiernan will be on the mound. The softball team will be at their own corner of the lower turf field at noon against John F. Kennedy Memorial High School from Woodbridge.

The boys varsity lacrosse game is also being delayed to a noon start. The VHS boys face Newark East Side on Sellitto Field, the upper field at VHS. (With three games on the schedule, parking is likely to be tight in the VHS lot. Think about carpooling or walking over.)

And for those of you planning on marching in the Verona Baseball & Softball League‘s Opening Day parade, know that it has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 15.
