MyVeronaNJ-Basketball-ThumbOn Thursday night at the Verona High School gym, the Hillbillies beat Orange High School 60-47 to clinch a share of the Colonial division title in the Super Essex Conference. Bloomfield and Orange will also get a piece of the division title because of their 9-3 record in their conference like Verona. It was also announced that Verona will be the #1 seed in North 1, Group 1 state tournament and will face Palisades Park in the first round on February 28.

The win against Orange improved Verona’s overall record to 16-5. Verona held the lead for the majority of the game even though Orange went out several runs, cutting the lead to single digits. Each time the Tornadoes pulled within striking distance, Verona would answer back and extend their lead.

The Hillbillies were hot from deep on Thursday, hitting seven three-pointers, three coming from Zack Zaccone (below) who led Verona in scoring with 13. Travis Jocelyn also dropped 12 in the win, followed by Matt Zaccone who had 11 points. Jack Farrell and Joe Zecchino also added 10.

Verona’s next game will be against Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
