The 11-seed Verona Hillbillies took on the 35-seed West Caldwell Tech (WCT) Eagles in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday. Verona blew out the Eagles 71-29 in one of their highest scoring games of the year.
WCT only trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter but Verona pulled away in the second, outscoring the Eagles 20-3. The Hillbillies used a heavy dose of points in the paint to establish their comfortable lead in the first half, but they got hot from beyond the arc in the second, hitting 5 threes to extend the lead over 30.
Ten Hillbillies contributed to the scoring effort, with Travis Jocelyn leading with 18. Jack Farrell had 18, Andrew Siegelin added 12, and Zack Zaccone chipped in 8. Right now, their next ECT game will be on Thursday, February 9 at 4:00 p.m. but that could change when they find out their opponent.
