mountainbiketeamSunday was the first day of light cycling training for a newly formed National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) mountain biking team.

Teen riders from Verona, Cedar Grove and surrounding towns combined to create a team that will soon be riding at venues around New Jersey where all riders will be earning team points towards the New Jersey championship. Sunday’s ride began at Community Park in Cedar Grove with a skills assessment and quickly moved to trail riding on the rail trail and bordering trails.

The bike team is being created under the auspices of the New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League, our state NICA chapter. As one of 19 leagues across the country, it organizes a mountain bike racing league for middle and high school student athletes.

The team’s organizers are encouraging all levels of teen riders to check out this new student cycling group and ride for fun every week. They say that no race experience is needed, just a love for bike riding outdoors. For more information, email Geordan Smith at [email protected].
