Richard U. Mascera Sr., DDS, 86, of Verona, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 26 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona. Interment will be private. Visiting will be on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St., Montclair, N.J.
Born in Newark, N.J., on March 12, 1930, Richard was the son of Santo and Luisa (nee Bucco) Mascera. He was raised in Montclair, graduating from Montclair High School in 1948. He attended Tusculum College and the University of Maryland prior to enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry where he obtained his DDS in 1956. After graduation, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Fort Campbell and Fort Dix.
Dr. Mascera established a dental practice in Upper Montclair in 1960 and retired in 2009. The family thanks Sally Ingalls for her longtime dedication to the dental practice and friendship to the family.
Richard was an avid golfer and former member of the Rock Spring Country Club in West Orange, N.J. He served on the Verona Board of Education for eight years, coached many years in the Verona Little League, was a member of the Verona Unity Club, and served Verona on many civic committees.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille (nee Palumbo) Mascera; five children, Richard Jr. (Gail), Gregory (Lisa), Nancy, David (Lynn), and Paul (Antoinette). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Richard, Danielle, Gina, Christine, Julieanne, Michelle, David Jr., Lisa, Mark, Michael, and Matthew. He was predeceased by his sister, Josephine Caputo, and is survived by his sister, Lorraine Agostini.
