The Verona High School Sports Boosters held their annual senior awards banquet on Tuesday, June 7. The event honors VHS’ senior athletes for all of their athletic accomplishments in high school and serves as an acknowledgement of Verona’s athletic accomplishments of the 2015-2016 school year. The event’s guest speaker was Pat Sempier, a VHS graduate who was a 2016 inductee into the VHS Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame and well known as football’s “Kicking Guru”.

At the banquet, Amanda Maguire was named Female Athlete of the Year and Mark Riggio was named Male Athlete of the Year. The current year awardees receive their honors from the previous year’s recipients, who were Julia Ashley and Frank Ferrari.

Angel Barkley and Chris Yeates were awarded the Maroon & White Award, and Director of Athletics Glenn Cesa was honored on his retirement.

Angel Barkley and Chris Yeates were recognized with the Maroon & White Award, which is presented every year to a senior male and female athlete who exemplify perseverance, enthusiasm, toughness and dedication to their sport.

The Boosters also recognized Director of Athletics Glenn Cesa, who will be retiring at the end of this school year. Cesa, who started teaching in 1983, had been the principal of Verona High School for 13 years and had also been the school’s assistant principal.
