Suddenly Summer

vintage-fanWhat happened? Mother Nature suddenly flipped that switch that took us from cold and wet (my heat actually kicked on for a few minutes on Monday) to sweltering. (My window A/C units were going full blast last night.) We haven’t even hit Memorial Day yet!

It should come as no surprise to me, or any of us who live in the area. Seems like we have less and less of a moderate spring and more of a sudden bang of heat. It has been my experience that the heat closes out the school year and then starts it off again in the fall. (I feel for all those kids and teachers who don’t have A/C. The schools may not need it for most of the year, but those few days when the heat soars, those classroom fans just don’t cut it.) Thankfully this year we didn’t use up all our snow days (how many years has it been since that happened???). As a result the kids get Friday as well as Monday off. (Although they still had to sweat through Wednesday and Thursday.)

Temperatures will be high Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We should all be glad that the pool will be open. It’s going to be crowded for sure, but that water will feel good when it hits the 90 degree mark. (The Jersey Shore is always an option for many of us, but the Atlantic Ocean will be a tad bit cold for swimming. Lifeguards won’t be on duty yet either so if you’re looking for a swim, the best place to go is the pool.)

Thankfully, temperatures will drop a bit for Memorial Day. If the rain holds off, I hope everyone will line the sides of Bloomfield Avenue for the parade. It’s the last chance to see the Verona High School Marching Band this year, as well as an opportunity to honor our veterans. The parade never disappoints with a wide variety of organizations joining in, so be sure to show your support. As always, the parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at Everett Field and ends at the Town Square where there will be a short ceremony to honor those who have served.

Verona may not exactly be a “small town”, but this small town type tradition is one that I hold dear to my heart. While this warm weather weekend is a great way to unofficially kick off the summer season (which is still nearly a month away), let’s not forget the reason behind it all. Thank a veteran if you have the chance (and not just on Memorial Day).

Hoping everyone enjoys our Sudden Summer. Be safe and enjoy!
