The next meeting of the Verona Historical Society will be held on Tuesday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Verona Community Center.

The subject of the meeting will be the old 1873 rail line that was projected to come thru Verona. The line was halted as a result of the Panic of 1873, a financial crisis begun by the collapse of a major railroad investor, but only after extensive grading had been done thru the Verona Valley, the construction of a trestle over Park Avenue, and the construction of abutments on each side of Verona Lake to accommodate a trestle that was never built. A tunnel was also partially constructed under the First Mountain which will be discussed in depth by Historical Society President Robert L. Williams, who was in the tunnel before it was sealed some decades ago.
